I do not know about XFCE, but when you're facing font problems affecting multiple programs, then maybe you need to have a look at fontconfig [1], an unfathomable rabbit hole... At least some things have changed, e.g., the `panels_collapse_controls` are different now, and have not been converted automatically during upgrade (which would be hard to do in general). Darktable really lacks documentation, and I hate staring at videos until the guy finally gets to the point I wanted to know, if ever. One can neither search nor skim-read videos.
