In the meantime things changed.

User ternaryd contacted me and offered to help with Exiv2. We did not succeed
due to my old Mac hard- and software but he motivated me to have a look at
Linux. Until now I tried the distribution Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) and
Xubuntu both on Live USB. And I'am really astonished how good this works
especially the first one (LMDE)! Now I will try a Linux OS with an old netbook.

Many thanks to ternaryd for convincing me that my experiences are not
necessarily typical!
