Hi Michael, as far as I know, there is still some uncertainty about that kind of behavior/issue - see https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/3128 and https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/4153. You may want to chime in on these issues and/or try to build a more recent version to check whether it fixes the issue or not. Which specific version/build are you using?
