if you are only one person using one machine at a time you might set the
config-directory (and also the cache-directory) to the path on the server:
e. g. like this:
# darktable --configdir "/path/to/server/config/darktable" --cachedir
"/path/to/server/cache/darktable"
This method works perfectly if you want to keep photos and darktable
state on an external disk, which can be moved from computer to computer.
