Base curve is to give a starting point and not so much to edit the image apearence. This can be done more easyly via color cuve. The differend default base curves is to give an aproximation to what the jpeg-engine of the camera does, as an starting point. The nice feature of darketable ist that you can select the appearance of another manufacturer as starting point, if you like that style more. Reason is to avoid dull images in shooting situations, when object contrast is much lower than camera sensor capabilities, which is often the case in evenly lit situation, which typically have an contrast of ~5..7 F- Stops. Cameras today are capable of 11..13 F-Stops. So a base curve unsually maps the middle area of 5 stops with steep gradation and the lower and higher get compressed. In a lot of shooting situation this gives a more contrasty image, which is better accepted by the audience. In fimlic-RGB this transition can be adusted precicely for each image. > > Most of the presets are for specific camera makers, so it's hard to > know > which one to chose. Albeit the manufacturer base curve is also adusted to the way a camera meassures and adjustes the exposure. So using this base curve, or the manufacture alternative is a good starting point for an edit. Using a base cuve for another manufacturers may lead to a shift in grey values. But image editing is an art, so you decide in judging how you like the results. greets.
