If I'm not mistaken, OP also uses Digikam. My suggestion would be to do
initial tagging and culling there, and adding titles/captions, with digikam
set to write sidecars. Doing that once returned home means you will probably
have forgotten some of the interesting details.
but this is not what I understand from

I'd like to review the images and do some "light processing" while on
the road but the rest will be done later at home.
where the poster obviously wants to also edit the photos on the road.

In my case it's easy: I simply duplicate the picture folder as well as the darktable profile on my travel computer - this way I have the complete archive with me and can work on this while travelling (bad weather e. g.) as well as adding new photos without any constraints.

Coming home I simply synchronize profile and picture folder back to the main computer.

If your travel computer is a "small" one" I'd also suggest to write xmps and import them in the main computer after returning back home. But beware that e. g. grouping of several images might be lost as from my knowledge this information is stored in database only (since it is "multi image information" and therefore can't be stored in a "single image xmp".
