Working with local files is very useful if you have just done a shoot and have uploaded the files to your main PC/library, and you want to grab a copy of those recent shots to edit on your laptop while you are on the road. However, in this case, the files are being uploaded to the remote laptop and edited there, and after returning home the files + edits should be imported into the main library.
Another option I've been experimenting with is a cloud drive called "Nextcloud". In Amazon AWS, I have created a virtual machine running the nextcloud software, and I have installed the Nextcloud client on my various laptops. I can upload files from a shoot to any of those laptops, and in the background the files will be synced up to AWS S3 storage. This means I have an offine backup in the cloud, plus local copies on my laptop(s). The main problem is that this seems to be an expensive solution, as you pay for not only the storage itself, but also the server resources, internet transfer costs when downloading, and S3 API calls. It is a very flexible solution though, and has been an interesting learning experience for me.
