Dear List,

Just want to add my experiences with Darktable 3.2 I installed it on a
testing laptop, a Macbook Pro 2011, so quite old but works decently well
with Linux Mint 20. I have been using darktable since the early days of
2015, and most recently I have had several months experience with
Darktable 3.0 before trying Darktable 3.2 today for about an hour. Some
basic observations:

1. In Darktable 3.0, there was a weird mask problem where mask inversion
required some tweaking with mask opacity to work. That problem is now
gone in darktable 3.2! Yes!

2. Darktable 3.2 with the new preferences window and other tweaks looks
really good. The context-sensitive buttons helps too. Everything looks
better.

3. I had to adjust to a new workflow. Previously if I adjusted exposure
first then activated filmic, filmic would adjust overall exposure as
well and then I would have to adjust the white level exposure and some
other variables to compensate. Now, that no longer happens, and I
believe the way it works is more logical now.

4. Also, on the topic of filmic, it is much easier to have a properly
saturated image now, adjusting under the "look" tab. When first
activated, filmic does seem to crush blacks a little, but that is easily
adjusted.

5. I still use tone curve as well as tone equalizer for artistic
adjustments, as the fine-grained control there is important, especially
for difficult lighting situations with birds.

Overall impressions: a worthy improvement (thanks, developers!). I am
going to adjust to a new workflow with darktable 3.2, but it is not a
big adjustment. I think overall darktable has come very far since the
early days, and it is hard to believe such a program is free software.

Sincerely,
Jason
