it's simply the fact that there are cameras out there who's manufacturer
decided to use that extension for their in-camera generated raw files.
Pentax (option), Leica e. g. and obviously those spy devices some people
call 'smartphone' ...
And as those files are in-camera raw files it is expected that they
behave like .nef, .raf, .cr2, ...
