sounds to me like the cached thumbs are bad, but to correct I would guess
you would need to remove the current cache and then generate anew.  know
that dt will generate cache thumbs for images it needs while
darktable-generate-cache will create thumbs for *all* images in your
library.db.

to test, you might just move the cache and open dt to view subject
image(s).

on linux it is:  /home/<user>/.cache/darktable/mipmaps*
dt will generate missing thumbs on need.
ie: opening a collection
