Thanks for the reply. I hope Darktable and other FOOS developers can work 
around this limitation imposed upon us by Canon. I also will now not upgrade my 
Canon camera. Seems like they don't want my business. If I buy a camera, I feel 
I have the right to develop images in any program I wish, but Canon has a 
different view. Of course, using Adobe's DNG converter would be a simple 
solution to handling the CR3 files for any current users of Canon and 
Darktable. I wonder if we lose anything when we convert to DNG from CR3?
