Dear Guillermo,

Re. the "darktable-generate-cache" defaults may not be optimum:

The default's level 2 thumbnails are already ca. 670 x 450. With typically four
to ten photos per row in lighttable view, we would expect thumbnails of the
relevant sizes to be readily available after running
"darktable-generate-cache". We will continue experimenting with "--max-mip"
settings higher than 2.

Re. do you really need to import the JPG?

Do we need the RAWs at the initial screening/tagging stage? Our Fujifilm
in-camera JPGs and iOS HIECs are perfect for this purpose. With the very little
experience we have so far with dt 3.4 this made us consider relegating
darktable to the editing phase. Again, we will follow your advice and exclude
the JPGs now in our dt testing.

Regards, Willi

  1. run the "darktable-generate-cache" binary (without parameters)
immediately after importing to ensure that thumbnails for all images exist
before starting the screening phase;
"darktable-generate-cache" takes an option to define the maximum size of the
generated thumbnails
(https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/special-topics/program-invocation/darktable-generate-cache/<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.darktable.org%2Fusermanual%2Fen%2Fspecial-topics%2Fprogram-invocation%2Fdarktable-generate-cache%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7C07c75e2eee7644cb499908d8d8c9b3df%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637497708097300233%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=RsN1taKc9HuSgAV8h%2FjpeVQGglGwchk%2BMErkGPeJlgw%3D&reserved=0>).
Depending on the zoom levels you use on the lighttable the defaults may not be
the optimum, and thumbnails would be generated on demand. Of course, the higher
the limit you use the more space on disk you'll need.

  1. collapse grouped photos (JPEG/RAW pairs) to half the number of thumbnails
that need to be displayed at any time.
Do you really need to import the JPG? It would be easier and faster if they're
not there.

Regards,
Guillermo
