darktable version 3.4.1
3.6 is now out, give it a spin if you can!
I'm struggling with applying the sidecars - xmp files.
Guillermo has already answered that, but there's a non-trivial feature
(documented, but not realised by many): darktable, by default, saves
the history stack into the exported JPG, and it can actually load the
history stack from such a JPG. The procedure is the same as with the
XMP, but you need to change the selector in the Open dialogue from
*.xmp to 'All files', and select the JPG file.
Also, if you're after a 'look', if perfectly fine to apply any history
stack to any image, even if it's a different camera -- just reset the
input colour profile to use the values for your camera.

Updating to 3.6 is my planned weekend task.
I did apply some xmp files accidentally on images and I got
warning/error from darktable - history stack corrupted or or something
similar. It was an operator error - choosing wrong style for wrong image
- most probably difference was one was dng file and other jpg file.
It took couple of tries until results of downloaded file and xmp files
matched with what I was seeing on the pixls.us. Now I have a long task
of learning how each module affected and what changed and then play with
my images to see if I can improve it.
The tool - darktable is excellent and my goal is to learn. pixls.us is
phenomenal - really helpful to novices like me. I've seen almost all
videos by Bruce Williams and learned a lot - but because darktable
offers so much rich functionality, it can be overwhelming and confusing
- when to use what.
I'm literally going xmp by xmp, studying the changes between each
history item, how masks were applied and so on.
Thanks for the help and pointers.
Regards,
Niranjan
