Thanks for your reply, Johannes.

I checked darktablerc and both of those options were the opposite of what
you listed. I changed them, so now I have:

never_use_embedded_thumb=FALSE
plugins/lighttable/low_quality_thumbnails=TRUE

After running darktable-generate-cache (which took a few hours for 4,000
images), I now have high-quality previews, thank you!

I have two follow-up questions:
1) Does darktable refer to everything on the lighttable as a "thumbnail"?
In other words, when I zoom in all the way in lighttable mode, what I see
is affected by any settings referring to "thumbnail," even though it's now
quite large on screen? If so, that probably means 1080p is the right
setting if I want to view images on the lighttable at full-screen, right?

2) During darktable-generate-cache, I received the following set of errors
(repeated for a handful of images):

TIFFReadDirectory: Warning, Unknown field with tag 18246 (0x4746)
encountered.
TIFFReadDirectory: Warning, Unknown field with tag 18249 (0x4749)

TIFFReadDirectory: Warning, Unknown field with tag 36867 (0x9003)

TIFFReadDirectory: Warning, Unknown field with tag 37398 (0x9216)

TIFFReadDirectory: Warning, Unknown field with tag 36867 (0x9003)

Any idea what that means?

Thanks again for your help,

-Owen
