That's certainly a special use case :)

I wonder if we should have an option to load images into library
*without* regenerating thumbs. Because that's what makes things slow.

In the end only relatively few thumbs from such a huge collection will
survive in mipmap cache.

The cache will typically be too small to keep a huge portion of them. So
we keep the cpu/gpu busy generating thumbs which are shortly after
thrown out from the cache again.
