I have 8G of RAM as well. I just upgraded video cards to one with 2G of 
onboard RAM (NVidia GeForce GT630).  Processing images now takes half 
the time compared to when I ran with only 1G of video RAM. The ability 
to offload most of the image processing onto your video card using 
Opencl makes a huge difference.
