The logic is as follows: - When the key is missing/empty the library will be expected in ~/.config/darktable/library.db - When there is a value associated it will be treated as relative to ~/.config/darktable/ if it doesn't start with a '/'. If it starts with a '/' it will be used as an absolute path. The logic can be found in src/common/database.c:69 and following. And yes, I know that it's a chicken-egg-situation.
