Yes I found the 32 spot limit as well. In my case I had a photo of some wild horses in the Camargue but where the sky was thick with flies, and the birds that lived off them - I think there were probably about 300 'spots' to remove on that occasion. This is about the only common operation I drop out into Gimp for now.
