My memory’s not that good but putting pretty much any combination of ‘camera
lock ubuntu usb’ into google turns up usb 3 related issues.

Ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2034012 pulls up an example with 12.04, a usb
3.0 port, shotwell and an iphone giving the ‘camera locked message’ – the fix
there was also to try a USB2 port. That suggests not the camera firmware but
some library (mis)handling usb3 common to both dt and shotwell. There again
there are more general USB3 problem reports with folks blaming PC BIOS or even
particular USB controllers so in general I think USB3==minefield and the fault
might be even more generic.

Rgds,
Rob.

Maybe better to see if a fix could be found in the dt code?

Assuming the problem lies with dt/gphoto in the first place...
Rob _seems_ to suggest it might be the camera firmware...

Rob, do you possibly recall where you noticed similar issues being discussed?
