If I had three monitors connected and arranged as a single desktop I'd want the 
image to fit on just the central monitor not to extend across all three i.e. I 
wouldn't want dt to just auto-size the image from display resolution. I think 
it also helped some folks trying to run dt on very low resolution laptops where 
 otherwise there were problems having the side panels readable so I suspect the 
setting is here for user convenience rather than any internal memory 
optimisation.

maximum drawing area? From my point of view the default should be always "as
