I think it also helped some folks trying to run dt on very low resolution laptops where otherwise there were problems having the side panels readable so I suspect the setting is here for user convenience rather than any internal memory optimisation.
OK - but why not replace that option with a "Constrain to current screen" option? Why leave it to the user to determine the best width by trial and error?
