Is that by any chance flow text which is an Inkscape specific feature that 
never 
made it into the SVG specs (long story)? You can check it by selecting the 
text in Inkscape and looking at the status bar at the bottom of the window. 
Should it be flow text you can turn it into regular text in the Text menu.
