if it isn't too inconvenient, i would delete
~/.config/darktable/darktablerc and try from a fresh one. you'll lose some
gui settings though (try moving it away first and see if it fixes your
issue before deleting it).
there was an update issue going from an old collection module to the new
one. the behaviour you describe is a bug and not the normal way it works
(should stick to the image where you last left lighttable).
