When i have problems with the basic curve, I don't hesitate to deactivate
it, and make my own adjustments with other modules.
For example, I'm currently working on tennis players photos, that has been
outside in full sun (no choice, I had to shoot them where they play...) and
the EOS basic curve makes the players skins much too red; thus, I
deactivate it for all these pictures, and use shadow/highlights (because of
the high contrast), then the tone curve to adjust the middle tones.
For me, the basic curve seems to have improved recently (in the beginnings,
I never used it), but it still doesn't cover every kind of pictures.
