I have exactly the same problem as you with my HD6850 card. Although having
1GB of RAM, for opencl only 512MB is available. This is an hardware/driver
issue. As Ulrich pointed me out several months ago, it seems to be an issue
of HD77xx and lower cards. If you will go for higher one, you should be
fine. But try to find more information to be sure. One possible source is

Usermanual seems to be a bit obsolete regarding this topic.
