If you really want to have both sets of XMP files, you could something like the 
following, which I was doing myself for a short time, before realizing that the 
same data was being added to the EXIF tags in exported JPEGs... just create a 
subdirectory named "darktable" or similar, and link all the image files there. 
Then import *that* directory into darktable instead of the parent. This is 
assuming Digikam can be told not to recurse to those subdirectories itself, of 
course.
