Forgot to mention two things: the a.m. option only has an effect on 
newly imported images. If you want to take advantage you will need to 
delete those images from darktable and re-import them.

Secondly, darktable never writes to your RAW files. All what I mentioned 
is only valid for darktable's internal thumbnail cache.
