I fully agree with you though user intent is not always obvious, see below.

A similar topic, but limited to auto-exposure, was discussed. I know 
because I asked the same recently.

There are different scenario where this needs happen:
* copy-paste between pictures in lighttable
* create style then apply
* use LUA scripting API.

The reference above say that so far only the LUA scripting API could do 
it AFAIK but I have not actually explored.
