I had the same experience on Google Plus.  Ended up turning off auto-enhance by 
default.  Picasa uses the Google Plus
settings, so this would also work for you:

* Go to the Google+ settings (https://www.google.com/settings/plus)
* in the "Photos" section, uncheck "Automatically enhance new photos"
