I Came across this as well and I admit I was quite irritated. Just
wanted to review photos on the train...
Additionally, up down arrows work to select the next row but nothing for
the next image? Surely, I missed something in the manual again, but the
page on light table in the manual gives some short cuts but none for
scrolling. I even remembered there was something about vi key bindings,
but the common hjkl doesn't work either (maybe it was just wishful
thinking ;), and funny enough the left/right arrow keys seem not to have
any function though they could probably be used.

Sort of. After some try and error I found that if you set the thumbnail
display to 1 (so only one image at a time) you get working
left/right/up/down for next/previous image in file manager mode. And in
zoom able light table mode (admitting, I do not understand the use of
that mode) it seems to work right away as you thought it should.
BTW: Coming to keyboard/mouse actions, I think dt is too much in love
with the mouse wheel. Surely, I'm the only one who hates touch pads,
disables those beasts first time seen in BIOS, and only use the
trackpoint on the road. Now, the trackpoint does not have a wheel...
