I have RAWs of this lens (with and without "STM", which are
optically the same, or at least very similar) on my hard disk and
revisited them; the corrections work nicely.

That said, wide-angle pictures of landscapes or people may become
worse by the correction because some wide-angle lenses are slightly
fisheye, which is good for such photos.  Making them perfectly
rectilinear (i.e., applying distortion correction) would give them a
distorted look.  However, this should only be true if strong
correction are needed.

BTW, I have converted many of my images to "stereographic"
projection (and distortion correction applied).  This really is a
hot tip!  Try it with wide-angle photos with people on them -- the
face will look much more natural.
