Yes,  Darktable just writes out the XMPs again. When I select a photo and
enter darkroom all my previous edits are gone. All I have is the basic

2 - base curve
1 - sharpen
0 - original

For instance, today I imported five folders from August last year (2013)
and the problem happened with three of them. I then restore the XMP from an
external HD (backup) and import the folder again. Only after doing that I
have my previous edits available. The files are Nikon D800 RAW (.NEF)
files.
