What darktable version are you using? Please open a bug report and attach an example file. There's probably something specific to the vuescan DNGs that rawspeed doesn't support. By the way. Is there any particular reason for doing DNGs in this situation? Do film scanners actually produce a bayer pattern? If they produce RGB you're probably better off just producing a 16bit or 32bit TIFF.
