I use OpenEXR with PIZ compression (Wavelet / Huffman), which effectively
compresses grainy images, as my storage format. That will cut the
filesize in half and preserv the depth. This conversion is done on the raw
TIFF before any processing. I have also added EXR support to darktable long
time ago..
