I have done a similar upgrade a short time ago: I am using an nvidia GTX 750Ti, with 2GB GDDR5 RAM, connected via DisplayPort to the LG 27EA83, with a resolution of 2560 * 1440. OpenCL works fine (no Quadro card needed, the Linux driver offers this also for "regular" cards). I tried 30bpp, it worked in general, but darktable downscales the output to 24bpp, so I have no use for it. I guess we can hope for 30bpp support at some future point, but right now 30bpp seems to make a difference only in krita, plus there are some applications showing just a black window in 30bpp (one of those was libreoffice, I think). I didn't have much choice in terms of graphics card, since my power supply has no additional connection for it, but the 750Ti seems to be a good card. My system is rather old, with an old quadcore Phenom 810, so the OpenCL acceleration is quite noticeable. The only part I'm still wondering about is the HD sound out built into the monitor: using the monitor in DisplayPort 1.0 mode, sound works mostly (except some firefox/flash strangeness), in Displayport 1.2 mode sound doesn't work at all.
