The efforts to match the preview as provided by Nikon inside darktable are limited. The other programs you mentioned may be displaying the preview JPEG that is embedded inside the RAW data, or they might have different presets as a starting point. darktable can show the preview JPEG image in the lighttable (gallery) view, before you have done any editing. But for the darkroom view darktable accesses the RAW data and processes in a basic way, without image styles etc. Feel free to make the image darker, add contrast and saturation to taste. You can create a custom style for your images, if there are certain settings you want to apply to many images.
