Thanks so much for your response.  My question was asked before I 
appreciated how the embedded jpeg preview worked.  Your nice summary and 
the friendly feedback I got on the darktable IRC channel was helpful in 
framing that.  I'm starting to appreciate how much more flexibility and 
discretion RAW development allows.

In case anyone else is also new to darktable and RAW development, I'd 
like to point out the terrific materials and especially the screencasts 
that are available at the website below.  I've only just started going 
through them but they're very helpful so far.
