See this thread for some feedback about new PC performance:

See above, the real one thing to decide is the GPU from my experience.

Well, both are quad-core processors, and dt can exploit this very well.

The i7 is hyperthreaded, i.e. each core can execute two threads, but
running two threads will not be twice as fast as executing just one (you
may expect around 30% performance improvement at best, but it really
depends on the application, I'm not sure what darktable would gain from
hyperthreading).

So, an educated guess would be "you may gain a little buying an i7, but
probably not worth the price". If you're going to overclock, then the
benefit of overclocking may indeed be superior (at the risk of damaging
your hardware though).

> PS. I also have a GeForce GT 520 1GB graphics card with OpenCL support.

In general, Nvidia GPU are said to be slower than AMD for OpenCL.

In this particular case, comparing my card to this one:

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-270-vs-GeForce-GT-520-PCIe-x1

  floating-point performance 2,304 GFLOPS vs 155.5 GFLOPS

My card is a pleasure to use with dt, but it's more than 10 times faster
than yours. So I'm not sure this would be enough. I had a previous
experience with a cheap nvidia card, and it was actually slower than my
CPU.

If your current PC can accept more RAM, then you may consider upgrading
to 8 GB RAM and a decent graphics card. You'd get decent performance for
less than 300 dollars. Changing your CPU won't change much OTOH.
