The .xmp files are XML, but if you open them e.g. in XML Copy Editor, the content is not human friendly. You can see what modules have been used, but the parameters need to be decoded. Someone could build a small programs that decodes the parameters and maps them to the respective modules in a human friendly form, but I don't think this needs to be an urgent task for the existing darktable developers. For all practical reasons, sharing xmp files seems enough. To satisfy a general interest, finding out how the parameters work and writing a script might be part of the learning experience.
