The local copy (sometimes called local cache, same thing) is working the other 
way round: it allows you to cache images from your external disk so you can 
keep working on them when it's not plugged in. Once you bring the external 
drive back the changes are synced to the XMP on there. It doesn't allow to do 
the initial import of images into the cache though.
