Hi,

I have finally sat down and started to look into how I can manage my
photos. I have previously used Aperture, but actually started to look for a
replacement before they announced that they would drop it since they never
supported any decent way of storing in NAS. I think Lightroom started to
support some NAS way of doing things but I would really like to go FOSS
when it comes to this. I basically can't dare to spend so much time
learning a tool without knowing…

I have "searched the internets" for a while now and made up my mind that
darktable looks like the way to go. The "cache locally" seems to be just
the thing I want since I will mostly work on a MBP that couldn't possible
fit all my images.

I just bought a ReadyNAS 104 with RAID1 and set up a share for my photos.
I'm currently rsyncing up one of my Aperture libraries (I have two since
both MBP and Mac Pro and there never was any good way of sharing)

My biggest concern is actually in the photo "management" side of things.
I'm not a power user when it comes to image development, but I think I put
"power demands" on image management.

I want to be able to browse around my entire collection which is already
above 1 TB and tag, rate and stuff like that, but I'm fine with only
working with developing the ones I have cached locally. I'll try to put
down my concerns:

1) How do I import my current library in a good way into darktable? I was
about to try to import recursively the entire Aperture library masters
which is basically foldered like yyyy/mm/dd, but now read that that was
really a bad idea. Is it possible to script importing each "day" one by
one? It's really not feasible for me to import each folder separately by
hand.

2) Will I be able to look around my library when disconnected from the NAS?
Is only thumbnails stored locally or also a little bigger jpegs?

3) What is a reasonable workflow for importing images later on from my
camera? I mean, I really want to do as little work as possible. Say I'm
travelling and need to import the RAW files to my local MBP drive to work
on them. When I later come home I want to place the RAWS on the NAS. Do I
then loose the edits I made and have to re-import in darktable?

4) I'm probably gonna use AFP, is that ok?

Thanks a lot,
Viktor
