"Collections" comes to mind. I would try to import all in one shot, and
use collections to do the tagging. Collect using dates.
Let us know how darktable handled this great amount of images.

I am using darktable just for private use. This is working for me:
1) I have a small bash script which moves images from SD-card into a
folder yyyy/mm/dd, based on exif data.
2) Reviewing the images very fast with geeqie, and rename/split the
folder as needed.
3) Delete the really bad files from within geeqie (moving to trash).
4) Set "comma separated tags to be applied when importing" in Darktable
settings
4) Import folder into Darktable.
5) Filter: View all except rejected.
6) Lighttable, tab, zooming in to see just one image, reject the bad
ones (Key r), go to next with arrow key.
7) Lighttable, rate the rest (key 1,2,3). 1: Keep for archival purpose.
2: Keep because it is part of a history. 3: Keep and develop.
8) Lightroom, ctrl+t (Tagging), Metadata (Title..)
9) Filter: 3 stars.
10) Develop in Darkroom. Review rating. Rate with 2/3/4 stars. 4: Can be
showed to public. Export, upload, print...
11) Filter: 2 stars.
12) Develop in Darkroom. Review rating. Rate with 2/3/4 stars. Export,
print...
13) Filter rejected only, and delete if no longer needed.
