I have 30years of computer habits: Store changes when you like them.
But DT does not work this way, it just happily saves away...

Darktable's "snapshot" does not provide any backup functionality [0].
If you take a snapshot, and then delete the history stack, the
snapshot does not serve as a means to restore the old stack, just as a
means to see where you have been before. (rawtherapee [1] does ist
that way, though, as pointed out in their manual [2]). I guess there
once was a feature request inthat direction, but I cannot find it in
redmine, maybe I'm wrong or it was on the mailing list.

Cloning is not really sufficient, because the two images are not
simple enough to tell apart (you have to look up the version number
under file information, or read through the tags), and the collapsed
group would always be represented by the nun-protected (i.e., ugly?)
version [3]. Also it's way to easy to accidentally change the group
head (which is to be told apart from the other images in the group by
a slight variation of the contrast of the "G" on the thumbnail).

Sure, if I want to shoot my foot I can do so. But I'd expect it to be
hard, i.e., the default direction of a gun should not be my foot.

Regards
Stefan
