My videos are getting a bit old now, but this will give you a decent overview 
of noise reduction in 
darktable:

I'd recommend using two instances of profiled denoise:

1: mode: non-local means, strength: 0.5, blend: uniformly, blend mode: lightness
2. mode: wavelets, strength 0.75, blend uniformly, blend mode: color

Then play with the strengths to get it looking the way you want for your image 
(one instance 
controls color noise, the other luma noise, so you can play around with the 
resulting grain to your 
liking).  Normally the only other thing I do after that is tweak some of the 
demosaic options on 
particularly noisy images.

Alternatively, you can try doing the same thing in the Equalizer using the 
lower splines.

Yes, this will remain a dream, because the way the camera manufacturers process 
their raws into 
jpegs is a proprietary secret.
