Too put it at its simplest exposure is a good module for correcting exposure 
i.e. when you haven't chosen the optimum exposure values in your original shot 
and need/want to compensate for this whereas brightness is a good module for 
altering the perceptual brightness of an image, even when that image is already 
correctly/optimally  exposed.  My personal workflow is always to optimise the 
exposure first, then play around with the subjective/presentation  type stuff 
afterwards.

But if darktable brightness also works linear and NOT mainly on midtones
like the above described for lightroom I really wonder why I should use
it at all and not stick to exposure.
