Kind of off-topic, but, since this thread seems to be just guesses and
"emotionally answered" questions, it just occurred to me to know what would
be the average age of the Darktable core dev-team? I'm a programmer,
myself, for about 32 years almost. I'm 51. I used to be very good in C,
around 1990. Now I program in java and for business purposes, mainly.
A software big and featurefull as DT is something like a dream, to me. But,
for example, I've never heard about Cairo.

Anyway... ages?
