No, that's not it. I've exported far larger images without a problem, and
it's not about cropping the image into something *smaller* (that sometimes
solves it), but changing the crop --- as in moving it, enlargening it or
whatever. My guess? Something about the XMP/settings saved from darktable.
When rewritten, it sometimes works. (Other times not.)

Then consider this a feature request. Really, at least for me, it is a
must. Automatic exposure for full image is all well and good, but almost as
often as not, you need to be able to tell the (camera or computer software)
what part of an image exposure should be calculated from. This worked well
with the older version of the exposure plugin (having chosen automatic, you
could draw a square in the image), as it still works in, for instance, the
white balance plugin.
