For what it's worth, my 2 cents:
I recently had to upgrade my PC because I now edit regularly ~ 600MPix images
and the 8Go RAM of the previous box were not enough. So now I have 32Go of RAM
and I'm considering adding 32Go more. Roman's rule of thumb gives:
600MPix * 3*4*4 = 29GB and indeed I *always* use all the 32Go of RAM and
*always* swap (sometimes up to 32Go swap). So I confirm the 'lower estimate'
piece of advice given by Roman.
Cheers

(yes, sounds about right)

I should probably note that those 8Gb must not be the the total amount of
RAM in the system, but the amount of free ram, fully available for darktable.
And do note that it is the lower estimate, in many cases darktable will need
*much* more. Though in many of those cases tiling will kick in and help.
