On a fresh darktable install, low-pass and high-pass are *not* applied automatically (base curve, orientation, sharpening are the defaults, if memory serves me well). You can set modules to be auto-applied. See http://www.darktable.org/usermanual/ch03s02s03.html.php ('auto apply'). You can even get rid of the automatically applied modules by creating a preset for them in which they are disabled. Check Preferences -> Presets to see what presets are stored in the database, and which are set to auto-apply. http://www.darktable.org/usermanual/ch08s05.html.php
