Alas, following these directions purged everything from the xmp files! Good 
thing that I’ve got the back-ups as also instructed to do.

When opening the original xmp files in a text editor I was able to see 
references to the GPS exif data. I suppose that I can manually edit each file 
to delete these references. However, in consideration of the number of affected 
files, that will be a massive undertaking. I know that I’m pushing my luck but, 
can the recommended instructions please be reviewed and modified so that the 
necessary steps can be done via the command line?
